Dan Pink Ted Talk:
1. What are your take-aways from this video?
Traditional ways of motivating people don't always work.  Monetary rewards which are usually effective motivators often have no effect on the quality or volume of work produced in our information based society.  2. What are the speaker's effective speaking techniques?
One of the extremely effective techniques he used was his organization.  He previewed the main points of his argument and then did a great job of concluding.  It was an organized, thoughtful, and logical presentation of the material.3. What is his/her presentation style?
His presentation style was rapid fire in terms of the information given, with reference but not citation to research that he generalized about.  If I were the devil's advocate, there are many examples in the world of situations where monetary rewards are the primary driver in highly complex and intellectually challenging endeavors.
4. What matters from this video? How does it connect to you personally? To education? To the world?
Different people are motivated by different things in different ways.  Sometimes, grades aren't always a good motivator for students because some feel they don't control their own study, they aren't given the chance to master a subject, and they don't see a connection between abstract study and their life.

Janine Benyus: Biomimicry in action
1. What are your take-aways from this video?
I find this Ted Talk absolutely fascinating because it gives proof that because we live in a brilliant world and that we have been able to mimic nature's most effect structures, yet, despite our masterful attempts to recreate these works of art, nothing is as good as the original product of nature. 2. What are the speaker's effective speaking techniques?
The speaker did an excellent job of speaking slowly in order to allow the audience to process what she was saying.  Also, she made a point of making eye contact with as many people as she could in the room.  Her message was clear and concise and she was obviously very prepared to deliver her speech.  Because her audience wasn't as familiar with the subject as she, she modified her language in such a way that people could understand what she was talking about.3. What is his/her presentation style?
Janine Benyus did a wonderful job of keeping her audience engaged during her presentation.  She displayed remarkable images on each slide.  Each image allowed the audience to keep more focused because they could study them and relate them to what she was talking about.  Also, she did an excellent job of making eye contact with as many people as she could in the room.
4. What matters from this video? How does it connect to you personally? To education? To the world?
This video is important to me because I am always amazed by the order, intelligence, and instinct possessed by animals living in nature, and nature itself.  Also, it's an important video to me because it helps me to recognize that although we are very sophisticated as a culture and we are astute enough to realize the efficacy of things in nature our attempts to replicate them are never quite as good.  It made me think of an attempt in the medical world to try and replicate joints and even bones.  Although these recreations are often surprisingly successful, they don't last nearly as long as our original body parts and aren't able to do certain functions.  This topic is also astonishing because it draws a group of people in like designers, architects, and engineers into a field in which they would otherwise have very little involvement in.  I believe that the greater the interaction between people in different careers, the more discovery will happen.

Sir Ken Robinson Ted Talk

TED Talk Day: Watch Sir Ken Robinson video--Blog 1

Response

Some of Sir Ken Robinson's speaking points

Creativity is as important as literacy...

If you are not prepared to be wrong you won't come up with anything original...

We're are educating people out of their creativity...

Output of public education to produce university professors...

Education predicated on academic ability...

Kids with degrees are doing nothing, academic inflation...

Intelligence is dynamic, brain very interactive...

Intelligence is distinct, everyone discovers their talents differently...

Adopt new conception of human ecology...

We need to celebrate gift of imagination and use it wisely...

1. What are your take-aways from this video?
Sir Ken Robinson brought up some very interesting points and certainly some that relate to Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind.  I thought it was fascinating when he said we are teaching creativity out of people because of the fear we have instilled about being wrong.  This really meant a lot to me because I have definitely felt this way before.  Even doing my sentence for English class, I revised it and "played it safe" so to speak so that I wouldn't be wrong in the eyes of my peers.  This presentation also helped me to realize that our education system is really fit for one kind of intelligence and one kind of learner.  I didn't appreciate that before since I am the kind of student that fits that mold.  I believe that we are unable to discover everyone's true potential because of this flaw in the system.  Also, I found it interesting when he talked about people receiving a college degree and then being unable to find a job due to, "academic inflation."  I have often thought that it was unnecessary for everyone to receive a college degree.  Often times, people with a creative gift can use that gift to make a very reasonable living.
2. What are the speaker's effective speaking techniques?

Sir Ken Robinson did an excellent job delivering his speech.  He kept his message simple, related all of his points back to one main idea, and injected humor into his delivery.  The audience was very engaged in his presentation because it was well paced and because of his clever sense of humor.  He never diverted from the point he was trying to make and his message was very simple and easy to comprehend.  All of these techniques made his presentation very audience friendly!
3. What is his/her presentation style?

Sir Ken Robinson didn't have a very interactive presentation, but yet his audience was still engaged.  He was able to get away with a non-interactive presentation because he had a non-interactive audience.  Also, although he didn't move around very much at all, he still made eye contact with numerous audience members.
4. What matters from this video? How does it connect to you personally? To education? To the world?

This video definitely had an impact on me, being a student in the present day.  It brought up a lot of points that made sense to me and applied to my situation.  I don't agree with Sir Ken Robinson when he said that all children are born artists and the question is if they remain artists after going through our education system.  I believe that students who are right minded won't lose their right mindedness no matter how or what they are taught.  They will forever be creative and their right minded nature will contribute to society.
